Transportation in Hamburg

Hamburg is a tourist and business city. And transport is one of the main components of the life of the city. In order not to be distracted by his study during the trip, let's look at all types of transport and travel now.

Transportation in Hamburg

Hamburg's transport system is perfectly organized. It includes subways and trains, buses, ferries and taxis. It is controlled by the Hamburg Transport Union (HVV). On the website of this company, see the schedule and make routes.

Metro and trains

The Hamburg Underground (U-Bahn) was opened in 1912. Today it has 4 lines and 91 stations. Interestingly, most of its sections pass along the surface and along overpasses.

The city electric train (S-Bahn) is an integral part of the Hamburg Underground. This type of urban transport appeared in 1906. Basically, S-Bahn lines run in the city. There are 4 lines of trains (+2 during peak hours) and 68 stations.

U-bahn

S-bahn

All lines of the S-Bahn and U-Bahn intersect at the central station (Hauptbahnhof).

The Hamburg Underground and train start working from 04:30 and end at 01:00.

The interval of movement of the metro is 5-10 minutes, at rush hour - 2.5 minutes; early in the morning, late in the evening and in some external areas - once every 20 minutes.

The interval between trains during the day is 10 minutes .; until 06:00 in the morning, after 23:00 and at night - 20 minutes.

On the night from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday, as well as before the holidays, trains run even at night, with breaks of 20 minutes.

Attention! To open the door to the train, you need to press a button or pull the handle on the door. Doors themselves do not automatically open.

Opening hours of day buses - 05: 00-23: 00; nightly - 23: 00-05: 00. Special Nachtbus night buses deliver passengers from the city center (from Rathausmarkt Square) to the outskirts.

Ferries

Ferry traffic pattern

Hamburg is a large port city in Germany. It would be strange not to use the Elbe as one of the roads. Therefore, passenger ferries run here, which are part of a single public transport system. By ferry you can not only travel to different areas of Hamburg, but also see the city from an unexpectedly attractive side.

The water transport system is managed by HADAG. It operates more than 20 ferries that follow 6 routes. See the route diagram and timetable here.

Ferry route maps and timetables are posted at all berths. Regular public transport tickets are suitable for travel.

Taxi

Taxi

Taxi is an expensive, but very convenient means of transportation around the city. In Hamburg, taxis can be found in specialized parking lots or caught on the street. Hamburg taxi is white. And by the sign "Taxi" on the roof you can easily find out if it is free or busy.

The following carriers are popular: Buluku-Taxibetrieb and Taxi von und nach Hamburg.

Tariff Zones

The Hamburg transport system includes 5 transport rings that diverge from the city center and are divided into separate tariff zones.

Zones A and B - "Big Zone" (Großbereich), inside which there is a metro and train network.
Zones C, D, E - "General" zone "(Gesamtbereich), covering remote areas of the city and the surrounding area.

To see the main attractions of the city, it is enough to purchase travel cards for zones A and B.

See the scheme of Hamburg public transport tariff zones here.

Transport tickets

Tickets for travel in the city transport of Hamburg are the same. They can be purchased in vending machines at bus stops or at the entrance to the metro station and electric trains, from bus drivers, as well as in the online store on the website of the Hamburg Transport Union.

It is not necessary to compost tickets, because they are valid from the moment of purchase (when buying, the number and time are printed on the tickets). Therefore, it is important to keep the ticket until the end of the trip. Travel control is not uncommon.

At the information stand, which is at every stop or next to the ticket machine, there is a plan with stops. Each stop is assigned a number. This number is important when calculating your travel time and ticket price.
